About the course…

The Golf Club is part of the Costa Ballena complex, which is an exclusive resort for tourism, leisure and sports in this southwest corner of Spain. In the early 1990′s, the Andalucian Tourist Board approached the then owner of the land with the proposal to develop the 400 hectacres (4,000,000 square metres) in to a tourist resort to include the golf course that now extends to 27 holes with plans for a further 9, as well as a par 3 course. The area is steeped in history and the land is the birthplace of the Mediterranean’s purest and richest folklore – flamenco. It is also the area that produces some of the world’s oldest and most famous Sherries and is also the home of the Carthusian horses and the origin of this renowned Spanish breed.

The golf course was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and opened in June 1997 and has matured superbly over the years. As the original urban plan was very strict, great care has been taken to satisfy the environmental issues in the design, which is a good mixture of holes of varying lengths, although this is not a particularly long course at 6,036 metres. It is an open and flat course that consists of 27 holes, 18 of which are of championship standard. Some of the holes run alongside the Atlantic giving you the feeling of links golf, whilst the others come inland and are parkland combining a few lakes and strategic bunkers. It is a good test of golf and ideal for all handicappers and the beauty of the surroundings makes Costa Ballena a worthwhile course to play. Ignacio Garrido is the club’s touring pro and considers this one of his favourite courses to practice on.

Costa Ballena prides itself on having some of the best practice facilities in Europe, where national golf federations like the English Golf Union, Finnish Golf Union Swedish PGA and many more visit in the winter months for training.

There are numerous hotels to choose from and this part of Andalucia is increasing in popularity day by day as a venue for a golfing break. Many people prefer the peace and tranquillity of the Cost de la Luz where there are now so many courses to choose from and with Jerez airport being only 30 kms away and new motorway links now open, it is far more accessible these days. Why not let Med Golf arrange a golfing break for you in this beautiful part of Spain?

On arrival you will find ample parking and a clubhouse that has all the required changing facilities as well as a gym and sauna. The new clubhouse has bar and restaurant facilities and you should take advantage of the views overlooking the practice facilities and Atlantic from the large terrace. There is a well-stocked pro shop and buggies are available although the course is easily walked. Lessons can be arranged and there are an abundance of professionals for you to choose from.

Visitors are welcome and if you are in the area you should let Med Golf book you a tee time. It is well worth playing and here you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area and the beautiful surroundings.
